Description

For quite a while I wanted to make a rectangular/cuboid vase mode box with a lid that locks firmly in place with a nice click - and finally found a way I'm satisfied with. The first prototypes were about 40mm in size, so it dawned on me that I could make them compatible to the gridfinity organizing system. However when you put a couple of them beside each other in a grid, it was difficult to pick one up somewhere from the middle - no grip.

So I decided to cheat and make a lid with a grip built in - but that doesn't work in spiral vase mode, so I needed to switch to pseudo vase mode (see below) for that grippy lid.

Vase mode, if possible, is usually the fastest way to print something, since there are no retractions, and if the pattern is not too big, printing speed is only limited by the minimum layer time (under filament/cooling settings). When you print multiple vase mode objects in one go you have to place the wide apart and set "complete individual objects" (PrusaSlicer) or "print order: by object" (OrcaSlicer) - then however the minimum layer time applies to each object - and pseudo vase mode is faster. That's why most of the boxes (and all the lids) in the photo are actually not printed in vase mode, but in pseudo vase mode. That way you can also pack them tightly on the build plate, and you can print 8 (small) boxes with lids in one go on a Mini.

The small H6 bin is 42 mm cubed and uses about 9g of filament; the H3 variant has half the height. The big versions are twice as long.

Note that the boxes are not stackable (in the gridfinity sense).

I added some simple gridfinity grids (baseplates) and a simple OpenSCAD script to generate other sizes, but there are quite better generators out there, just search for gridfinity generator here or on the internet.

Printing - vase mode

  • vase mode

  • extrusion width - external perimeter (line width - outer wall) 0.8mm (even with a 0.4mm nozzle)

  • you can print box and lid in one go by placing them apart and using output options - sequential printing - complete individual objects (print sequence - by layer)

  • you can speed up the process by reducing the minimum layer time (filament - cooling)

Printing - pseudo vase mode

  • 1 wall

  • zero top layers / top infill

  • zero sparse infill

  • 0.8mm extrusion width external perimeter / outer wall

  • scarf joints everywhere and not only on smooth perimeters (override and force scarf seams, no smart scarf seams) - I do this to avoid a normal and possibly weak seam in that single wall.

  • (not important) disable ensure vertical thickness

  • you can print many in one g, tightly packed on the build plate
