Watch the Overview

SMARS, which stands for “Screwless/Screwed Modular Assemblable Robotic System,” is a straightforward robot designed specifically for educational purposes. Its key features include a minimal number of components, the ability to assemble without screws or soldering, and the absence of glue or similar adhesives. Plus, it's incredibly cost-effective to build!

One of SMARS's standout aspects is its modular design. You can easily attach various sensors and tools and even create your own custom parts. In the future, I plan to add new modules and downloadable content (DLC) to enhance the model on my Cults 3D page. It would be fantastic if you could share your modifications as well!

To build the basic model (using “chassis-SL.stl”), you only need a few extra components. You can find a complete kit here: SMARS V1 Kit or purchase the following parts individually:

Amazon Link: Amazon Components

  • 2x Mini 150RPM Motors: Link
  • 1x 9V Battery: Link
  • 1x 9V Battery Connector: Link
  • 1x Arduino UNO: Link
  • 1x Adafruit Motor Shield V1 or V2: Link or Alternative

For the screwed version (“chassis-S Mk2”): Link, you will need two 25mm M4 screws and two self-locking nuts.

TIPS: The joints of the tracks are simply pieces of 1.75mm filament cut to the appropriate length. To assemble the screwless version, you will need a multi slip-joint gripping plier to insert the “slave wheels.”

One of the upcoming DLCs will feature the Quadpod mod. If you're interested in transitioning from tracks to legs, use the screwed version “chassis-S Mk2” (Link), as “chassis-SL” will not be compatible!

Building instructions are available in the "doc lite" folder.

These models also accommodate:

  • 3x AAA batteries (check my profile for the DLC)
  • 1x PS3 controller 1800mAh 3.7V Li-Ion Battery (use with caution and only if you know what you are doing!)

P.S. If you enjoy my projects, consider supporting me by tipping or purchasing materials through my links. It won't cost you anything extra, and it will help fund new projects! Your support is greatly appreciated!
