Description
32oz/48oz & 16oz Nalgene Wide-Mouth Water Bottle replacement Lids
I've been using Nalgene water bottles for years for the tea I drink at work, and the coffee I drink after lunch, and I've never been super happy with the lids. the tether strap gets in my way, the lids are hard to clean, and the grip features aren't comfortable.
so, I wanted to fix all of these things. I got on a threaded-lid kick, and I'll use these almost every day, so it's def. an upgrade to my life.
v2
I had some difficulties with liquid getting into the threads, and from there dripping onto me or the floor, so I made the stopper feature taller and steeper, and cut some concavity into the top surface to keep drips off the sides of the stopper.
this worked way better than I expected, and it's so pleasant to use.
I had some staining (tea, after all) on the top surface of the stopper, and—while it does hold the bottle sealed—there was clearly some porosity to the top surfaces of v1 versions. so, I'm experimenting more seriously with ironing all top surfaces. to that end, I changed my recommendation (below) to a top shell thickness of 1.5mm, to provide a really even surface for the ironing, and I'm testing 20% ironing flow, now. so far, so good.
if anyone has any recommendations for me, I'd love to hear them.
features
- seals well without a gasket—even PLA
- the grip features are comfortable, and pleasant to turn
- turns super smoothly
- the diameter is relatively large
- easy to turn — hopefully better for people with hand mobility problems
- more material in the part under tension = more durable
- easy to clean
- there's enough space around the seal feature to get a sponge in
- other than the threads, there's nowhere for liquid to get trapped
- no tether strap. this may be a deal killer for you, but I hate them
printing
- PLA is fine. if you prefer something else, just check that it's food safe, and wash it before you use it. as long as the layer adhesion is good, it'll work
- prints without supports if the top of the cap is down
- 4 walls—such that the inside of the grip features meet the wall where the threads are
- for the threads to print nicely may require reduced or variable layer height:
- Adaptive Quality/Speed: 0
- Smooth Radius: 7
- (optionally) ironing on all top surfaces
- top shell thickness 1.5mm
- ironing flow 20%
my 3mf file should include all these settings
notes
I want to shout out LoboCNC's Tetra Pak Cap Helper ( https://www.printables.com/model/1011633-tetra-pak-cap-helper/comments/2091487 ) for giving me the idea of concave grip features. I have started to hate convex/ridged grip features since I started using the Tetra Pak Cap Helper. I've left a bit more space between the indentations, on my model, but otherwise it's very similar.
after uploading all my files, I looked to see what else was already available, and only found two that had a good seal feature. this one: https://www.printables.com/model/356142-nalgene-63mm-replacement-caplid is very similar to mine. the other also used the same conical stopper.
