Description
This project discusses an approach to Implementing the Radio Merit Badge (RMB) Fox Hunt element and the 3D printed parts that made it possible. The K4TBS ARC printed and prepared 16 "Fox Hounds" to use the NZ1J DDF and Uniden Bearcat scanners. We run the merit badge with 2-scout patrols for each hound and put 8 foxes on a 1-mile loop, using topo map and compass.
The biggest hurdle in planning was to come up with a fox hunt rig that would meet the Merit Badge Requirement for the Scout to "build a simple antenna and use it with a provided receiver" to hunt a hidden transmitter. There are plenty of fox hunt antennas that could be used - like Moxons, Yagis, or Loops. These are all finicky, will take a few hours to build, and will require an attenuator to function.
Since we run the entire RMB as a one day class (5 hours to cover all the requirements, not just fox hunting) at our resident camp, we needed the simplest antenna possible that could be built in less than 30 minutes or less - and our solution was to use wire dipoles with the NZ1J DDF.
See PDF for detailed background and assembly.
