Description

🤖 Comet Crawler – A DIY Walking Robot

Designed by Jorvon Moss (aka Odd-Jayy), the V1 Comet Crawler is a fun and approachable introduction to walking robotics. Inspired by the Kame robot, this design focuses on simplicity, affordability, and hackability—perfect for anyone interested in experimenting with robot locomotion.

The V1 Comet Crawler uses eight micro servos and an Adafruit Feather board to bring the 3D-printed body to life. Once assembled, it crawls forward with a quirky, otherworldly gait. Think of it as a launchpad—you can start here, then build and improve your own walking robot designs.

🧰 Parts You’ll Need

8 × DFRobot 9g Metal Gear Micro Servos (1.8 kg)

1 × Adafruit Feather 32u4 RFM95 LoRa Radio

1 × 8-Channel PWM/Servo FeatherWing

2 × Batteries (separate for servos and Feather board)

Assorted 3 mm screws/rods for leg assembly

🖨 Printing Tips

Print the base first to secure the servos and electronics

Assembly is straightforward with included CAD files (STEP & STL)

Room in the head piece allows for battery storage

Designed to be modifiable—tweak the CAD files to suit your needs

💻 Programming

This project uses a modified version of the Octosnake Arduino library (originally developed for the Kame robot). The code sets the servos to 90° to stand the robot upright, then begins a simple crawling walk cycle.
