Description

Summary

This is a rack-mount cage system for the Protectli FW4B mini-PC (a popular OPNsense / pfSense router for home-labbers). It is designed to fit either a standard 19-inch server rack or 10-inch mini-rack and take up 1U of rack-space. It is only as deep as the FW4B, adding less than 10mm of additional depth. It includes keystone jacks for easy access to rear ports.

STEP files are provided for you to modify and remix. Please upload remixes back to Printables and link them as a remix of this model, so we can grow the community.

It is worth noting that using the FW4B in a rack with equipment above and below may lead to overheating issues (since there is no active cooling). Try to place the device at the top of the rack or where it has space to allow airflow around it.

Parts Overview

Cage

The cage is designed to be a relatively snug fit to the exact shape of the FW4B. It is slid in from the rear and then the rack wings are used to secure it in. The cage and panel do not block access to any ports.

Wings

There are wings for both 19-in and 10-inch rack sizes, with options that contain and remove the keystone jacks. All wings are designed to take the weight of just the FW4B in a rack with cables attached.

Printing Guidelines

This is a very simple print. I would suggest using PETG. You can print in PLA but this has a habit of bending over time. The old version (see legacy version folder) was printed in PLA+ and installed in my rack two years ago and is still working fine. Your mileage may vary.

I use M3 screws to secure everyting together, with standard heat-set inserts in the cage body to allow everything to screw in. The diameter of the heat-set inserts is 4.25mm and should therefore support most types of M3 inserts. Each has a depth of 5.5mm.

You need one cage from the “Cage” folder" and two wings (left + right) from the folder appropriate for the size of your rack. The keystone variant comes with cutouts for keystone jacks to be installed.

The cage is printed with the face down. The wings are printed in the orientation you'd see them in the rack (the additional support bracket for the wings faces down). You only need supports if you're using the keystone variant of the wings - use snug supports.

This model has been redesigned to be parametric. The legacy version has been moved to a folder “Legacy Version” to maintain support for anyone running the old version.
