Description

DESCRIPTION

This is my wool winder, the Wind0Matic.

It's fully designed with 3D printing in mind and most parts are printable without supports.

Heavy or lightweight yarn, this winder turns all yarn weights into nice cakes and is easily disassembled for storage.

How to use

Place the yarn through the hole in the WoolWinder_Guide_Arm_Tip then through the hole in the WoolWinder_Swing_Arm and lastly place the yarn in the slots on top of the WoolWinder_Winding_Cone. See Image #1 as example. Keep a slight tension on the yarn as you turn the handle to ensure the quality of the cake.

Place the Wind0Matic onto the edge of a table and adjust the screw to affix the wool winder.

The WoolWinder_Guide_Arm can be adjusted to accommodate different yarn weights. From very small to very large. (50gram/1.8oz to 150gram/5,3oz Possibly works on even larger and smaller skeins but I've not tested that yet)

PRINTING

The Wind0Matic consists of multiple printable parts that are all pre-oriented. Reorienting is not necessary.

The model files are available in two different formats: pre-placed in groups or separate as individual parts. Choose the format that works for you, either option will work just fine. All parts are in the right quantities when picking either option, there is no need for duplicating parts.

When printing small parts bed adhesion is very important, make sure your print-bed is clean and your filament is dry. Depending on your bed adhesion, some parts may need a Brim. All parts that potentially need a Brim are in Group 1 - Small Parts and all individual parts that may need it have notes that say so. If you decide to use a Brim make sure to remove it properly to ensure all parts fit.

Do not use Supports, only use Support Enforcers for WoolWinder_Winding_Cone.

You can pick whichever material you like but I recommend using PETG or something similar for the parts labeled Clamp, for most other parts PLA will suffice.

If you use Imperial hardware print the WoolWinder_Washers at 200% height.

HARDWARE

Here is a list of the necessary hardware needed for the Wind0Matic.

The threaded rod can be between 155 and 160 mm long, you might need to cut a piece of rod to length.

For American makers (Imperial) you can use 5/16" / 18 TPI hardware instead of M8. If you use Imperial hardware print the WoolWinder_Washers at 200% height.

To install the nuts I added a printable M8 Socket, no other tools are required. (Should also work for Imperial nuts)

ASSEMBLY

Below are the assembly steps, follow them in order. Use the bill of materials to look up the referenced numbers. This assembly guide is also available in PDF form in the files section.

Do not overtighten! Ensure that moving parts can move freely.

A lot of parts are snap fit and may need a bit of force to assemble.

Once you've completed all steps make sure to grab your favorite yarn and start crankin' that thang!
