The Cathedral of Cusco or Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin of the Assumption is the most important religious monument in the Historic Center of Cusco, Peru's second-most important city, high in the Andes mountains. The cathedral is located in the current Plaza de Armas (central square). This same location used to have important Incan buildings, which were torn down by Spanish colonizers in order to build the cathedral and the new, European-style city.

It was built between 1560 and 1664, with complications along the way due to administrative and bureaucratic reasons, various phases carried out by different architects. Its Gothic-Renaissance façade reflects the style of Spain during the conquest of South America and also Cusco. Its Baroque, late-Gothic and Plateresque interiors have some of the most outstanding examples of colonial gold work and carved altars.

In 1972 it was declared as a Historical Monument of Peru, and in 1983, being part of the historic center of the city of Cusco, became declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Site (from Wikipedia).
