** You do not need to disassemble your telescope. The tubes slide between two rods when you squeeze them gently. Print the tubes in vase mode (0.16 mm) or spiralize outer layers (eSlicer) with zero bottom layers. The tubes can be screwed together and they are helpful since you can customize the height of the tube to fit your build. The tubes can also slide up when you need to collimate or clean your mirrors. This was also very important for me.
So you have finally spent days/weeks printing the Leavitt “Lite” metric telescope but something seems missing. Where is the tube to make it look like a professional telescope and to shield the mirrors from stray light (very common if you live in a city)? I have not tested this on the standard Leavitt telescope but the size should be quite close.
I wanted to print the tubes and add them to my telescope later. However, I could not find anything that worked with the current build. Hence, I remixed one that fits the metric version.
You need to make sure you have done the following:
- Glue the metric UTA attachment to the bottom part of the UTA. It should fit well and you can use an accelerator to speed up the process.
- Print 4 Tubes As and one Tube B in vase mode with zero bottom layers (PLA).
First, make sure you have collimated your telescope and everything works great. Start at the bottom (LTA). Insert the first Tube A by squeezing it gently and sliding it between 2 rods. The tube should fit between the mirror and the inner side of the LTA. Insert three more and then screw them together till they are snug and tight. Do not apply too much pressure…just stop as soon as you feel that they are well-connected.
Now measure the distance between the top of the top-most tube and the lower part of the UTA. You do not need to be 100% accurate. You can always unscrew a part of the tube attachment to increase the height of the tube hence it is always better to use a number that is 2-3 mm lower. You can print tube A to the exact height (minus 2-3mm) or cut it to size with a sharp pen knife. I used a pen knife since it was much faster and any bad cut would be hidden inside the UTA.
Now move the UTA up by 4-5 inches and insert Tube B. Screw it to the 4 tube As and then slide the UTA back while keeping the tube centered. Remember if you see that the tube s shorter, just unscrew the last tube A and it will increase the height. The top of Tube B should slide inside the attachment and keep it snug.
Yippee….You are all done!!!
Now if you want to clean your mirror or need to insert the “center spot placement” to collimate- Just slide the UTA up and then slide the tubes up. The inner sleeves in the middle will help keep the tubes in place. Now insert the “center spot placement”, slide the tubes down, move the UTA back down in its original position, and adjust the mirrors as needed. You can also use this method to clean the mirrors when they are dirty. I hope this helps.
Enjoy!!
