This is meant to be done in sheet metal, (.119″ or 3.02mm) steel.
The covers are meant to be customized and 3d printed. I also added the blank STLs if you want to print and drill IRL.
You're also supposed to do your own cabling for the buttons you add. You could use an Arduino Micro that emulates a game pad, something like Leo Bodnar's 64-Input Button Box Interface Board, OR an ESP32 and build a bluetooth gamepad with a LiPo battery using the Arduino framework like I did (check out the discord).
Instructions:
- Take the “*-flat.dxf" file to a sheet metal fabricator. Tell them it's for (.119″ or 3.02mm) mild steel. Similar material is ok, but Aluminum is not, it will flex too much.
- Have them Cut and Bend the metal as the pictures show (see bend detail).
- Ask them to tap at least the front face holes with an M4 tap (and use M4 bolts) or maybe a #8 bolt in imperial (verify first), otherwise you'll have to use M3 bolts with nuts, and that will be extra annoying.
- Optionally, Ask them to weld the little tab to the side mount.. it's not necessary but it will be stronger and flex less.
- Download the covers.step file and upload it to your favorite 3d editor, add some holes wherever you want buttons. OR download the blank STLs
- Print them
- Install a bunch of buttons or encoders
- Wire a bunch of buttons or encoders
- Install the covers with M4 bolts if the holes are tapped… otherwise suffer with M3 bolts and nuts
- Enjoy.
