Description

While designing a holder for the Samsung S25, I ran into the problem that I wanted a fully 3D design without using supports. At the same time, I needed a clean and stable way to connect a ball joint socket to the flat back surface of the smartphone holder.

To solve this, I developed a mounting mechanism that joins the ball joint socket and the phone holder plate mechanically. I really like this solution, as it generally allows connecting 3D-printed parts without gluing.

I also had to develop a new 17 mm ball joint mechanism, because the screw used to fasten the ball joint needs to exceed the diameter of the ball. This requirement is not compatible with many commonly used, easily printable 3D ball joint designs.

This design consists of the following components:

  • Ball joint socket for 17 mm balls

  • Screw to fasten the ball joint

  • Smartphone holder plate

  • Screw to connect the socket and the smartphone holder plate

  • Ball Pin: 17mm and 17,2 mm

  • No supports. However, depending on the chuck you want to use the ball pin with, you might need support for that.

  • Chuck für Ford Fiesta MK6 (needs supports for print)

17 mm ball (from whichever compatible design you want to use). I included a generic 17 mm ball as well as a 17.2 mm version. You can use either of these as the mount for your holder.

I added STEP files for most of it so you can modify the design for your own needs and/or you can comine it with some attachment structure. The thickness of the base plate is 2.4 mm. If you keep this value unchanged, all parts will fit together correctly.

Update 23.07.26:  I added a slightly higher tightening nut (Tightening_Nut_V26) to the original model, which I recommend using. It features more thread and grips the socket better.

Printing

  • Printed in PETG

  • 0,2 mm

  • 3 Perimeters

  • 5 top and bottom layers

  • no supports (only for the the Ford Fiesta MK6 Chuck).

This is still somewhat experimental, but already in use in our Ford Fiesta. Let me know what you think about this way to connect parts.
