Description

The PolyDryer XL’s stock handle/roller system is clever, but physics is a tough critic. A 3kg spool creates significant friction on a simple plastic tube, which can lead to underextrusion or unnecessary wear on your printer’s gears.

This reinforced version incorporates standard 608 bearings to provide a smooth, frictionless rotation, ensuring your printer doesn't have to "fight" the weight of the spool inside the dry box.

Features

  • Heavy Duty: Designed specifically to handle the weight of large format spools.

  • Frictionless: Uses 608 bearings (common skateboard bearings) for smooth delivery.

  • Drop-in Replacement: Fits the PolyDryer XL handle system without modifications.

I’ve optimized these settings to balance print time with the structural integrity needed to support 3kg.

  • Main Roller Tube: 30–40% Infill (Gyroid recommended for strength).

  • Retaining Pins / End Caps: 100% Infill. Crucial: These parts bear the shear load of the spool weight; do not skimp on infill here.

  • Material: PETG or ASA  (or similar) recommended for durability, though PLA works if your dry box environment stays below 45°C. I printed mine in Polymaker HTPLA as it doesn't need annealing, and is easy!

  • Supports: You'll need supports for the gap in the end cap that slots into the handle, and also the base of the main tube where the bearing goes. They come out very easily. I also recommend a small brim for the main spool holder tube.

Required Hardware

  • 2x 608 Bearings (Standard 8x22x7mm bearings).

Assembly Instructions

  1. Press-fit the 608 bearings into the ends of the main roller tube.

  2. Insert the retaining pins through the bearings.

  3. Slot the assembly into the PolyDryer XL handle/frame as you would with the stock roller.

  4. Load your 3kg spool and enjoy the smooth pull!
