Description
I was asked to make a bunch of these puzzles, but most versions use magnets, and I didn't want to insert or glue dozens of those, so I made my own version with a snappy printed locking mechanism and a print-in-place hinge, so no assembly required (other than putting the pieces in, of course). I also gave it a bit more storage room for the pieces, so the puzzle can be closed more easily when not solved, without shuffling the pieces around to get the puzzle shut.
The origin of this puzzle seems to be a wooden puzzle featured in this post on Khan Academy blog 2015, stumping some software developers trying to find a solution for the hard side. The first 3D-printed version seems to be from Joe Larson in the same year, who named it "Puzzle of Evil". It then got remixed a couple of times. I remodelled it from scratch.
Both sides are solvable, the "easy" side actually isn't so easy, and the hard side needs some not so obvious approach, but all tiles lay flat in that area.
Please do not share pictures of the solved puzzles; it would ruin the fun for others.
Printing:
This model is supposed to be printed in 2 colors for the case, needing only 2 color swaps (3 with text on top), so low waste on single-nozzle multi-color printers; the filament changes can even be done manually.
-
Assign colors to parts 3 and 4 for the area the puzzle pieces are supposed to fit. Assign a different color to the pieces (part 5), but disable "printable" and print them extra later.
-
Add text (easy, hard, or whatever you want) to the puzzle areas in the slicer as cut-out, 0.2mm deep, to let the underlying filament shine through.
-
optionally add text/svg/... to the bottom side as modifier with different color, again 0.2mm thick
— or 0.4mm for more intense color if the filament is not very opaque. -
or just use the PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer 3mf files, where this is already done.
