Description

I needed a way to hang my FEIT Electric LED String Lights. I had an existing turnbuckle and ring for a sail shade, and I originally attached the lights with a zip tie in using the built-in hanging hole for the lights. Unfortunately that thin molded rubbery plastic only lasted a couple months.

I designed this bracket to hold the string lights around the cord instead, which also helps keep the light away from the post they're mounting to. I designed it to have channels to guide the zip ties to prevent them from being twisted. This keeps the load predominantly in tension, leveraging the strengths of the zip tie. The tip is designed to stabilize the bracket against the carabiner, hook, rod, eyelet, wire, or similar. To prevent the two halves from being pried apart by whatever you're mounting the bracket against, two M6×8 screws/bolts and hex nuts can be used to secure the top fingers together.

Relevant attributes:

  • Fits perfectly around a 7.5mm (0.3") cord

  • Secure to the cord using small zip ties around each end

  • Attach to a mounting point with a standard 8" zip tie and snug tight

  • Optionally secure the halves together using (2) M6×8 socket head cap screws and hex nuts

  • Print with 3 walls using PETG or ASA or similar and a strong infill (e.g., 10% honeycomb)

  • Orient the inside faces against the bed during printing

  • Bottom notches make it easy to snip zip ties later

  • 50mm (W) × 60mm (H) × 20mm (D) when assembled

I made this specifically for string lights, but it can also be used for hanging a dowel, steel or aluminum rod, or extension cord.

The Head and Tail parts are nearly identical, but the Head is designed to accept socket head cap screws and the Tail accepts the corresponding hex nuts. If you don't intend to use them you could print all Head parts.

Note: I'll try to get photos of it in use soon. Weather has been unpredictable lately!
