New XceL Checkerboard Puzzle

A checkerboard dissection puzzle: Put the 13 pieces together to form a 8x8 checkerboard with correct pattern.

The pieces are one-sided.

The puzzle is called XceL Checkerboard Puzzle No. 2 and was mass produces by Doyle Puzzle Co., Buffalo, NY, around the 1920s.

Printing instructions:

The main color (usually black) is used for the pieces and half of the caps. A second color is needed for the other half of the caps for the checkerboard pattern. The caps can easily be snapped onto the pieces.

For the 13 pieces you need

• 2 copies for each of the parts 5 (L5) and 10 (X5), printed in the main color;
• 1 copy of the remaining nine parts, printed in the main color;
• 32 caps printed in the main color,
• 32 caps printed in the second color.

Prints with no supports. Snap the caps onto the different parts as in the picture. The caps are printed upside down, so the pieces will have a very flat surface.

Be sure to use the correct checkerboard pattern for the pieces.

I printed the puzzle in PLA at 0.1 mm layer height.

Puzzle difficulty:

The puzzle may look easy, but is definitely not. Expect to spend a couple of hours to find a solution.

Here is a hint: There are several sulutions where the 8x8 checkerdord is composed of two 4x8 checkered rectangles.
