Description

This KRYPTEX is a longer variant of Hiob's 6-wheel cryptex. With a billion possible combinations as opposed to a million, it's a bit harder to crack. Hence the unambiguously hard K instead of a C in the name. ;-)

Hiob's design is based on CloudJ's design, which is nicely demonstrated on YouTube.

Rafts: No

Supports: No

Resolution: 0.1mm for outer rings, 0.3mm for all other parts

Infill: 100%

Filament: PLA Brown, Gray, & Black

Bottom & top fill: Archimedian Chords

Perimeters: 1

Print nine outer wheels. Print one of every other piece. See which size of inner wheel fits best, then print eight more of that size.

How I Designed This

I extended parts A and B of Hiob's cryptex design by 36.6 mm to accommodate 3 more discs.

Filament Selection & Finishing Touches

I selected the following materials:

  • ColorFabb™ steelFill™ filament for the decagonal endpieces of parts A and B; black PLA for the cylindrical sections
  • Dark brown PLA for inner wheels
  • Cherry wood PLA for outer wheels

I sanded the steel- and wood-infused parts a bit and brushed them with steel wool. This improved the appearance and lightened the color of non-recessed areas so that numerals and index marks stand out. I sanded the sides of the assembled wheels a little till they all turned easily.
