Description

While trying out Sony hot shoe covers for my A6700, I wanted to test out making them out of some of the Proto Pasta Copperfill PLA that I had on hand, and then sanding it smooth to bring out as much of the copper shine as possible as an accent piece. I liked the design of this hot shoe cover but the projecting grip surface made it difficult to sand the top surface smooth, so I simply reversed it to an indented version which allowed me to sand and polish the top smooth.

Printing tips

If printing with the expectation of sanding, it helps to make the layer height as small as feasible on your printer for the smoothest possible starting surface. I printed mine at 0.10 layer height on my Prusa Mini. However, the base may be printed at 0.20 layer height since I found a smaller layer height made some of the layer steps in the base a bit awkward to finish. I left the other sides unfinished but covered the entire thing in a few layers of clear coat for protection.
