Description

Cut the flat back cover off of the original solar panel, leaving the rectangular shaped rim to slide this enclosure over. Remove all existing electronics and solder the panel output to a buck converter set to about 5.75 volts if you are using a CN3065 solar charge controller, as the panel puts out well over 7 volts.

There are no internal brackets for components. I used two layers of foam double sided tape to attach the buck converter and solar charge controller to the back of the panel, then B7000 glue to attach a dual 18650 style 5200mah battery to the inside of the housing. The antenna hole is sized for an SMA connector, and I used a Seeed NRF52850/sx1262 kit hanging freely so I can easily connect a USB C cable for flashing, but you can use whatever board you like.

I drilled one hole on each side through the enclosure and into the existing rectangular rim of the panel for screws to secure everything together, and straps from a trail camera to mount it. It will mount flat on a surface, on the corner of a square post, or on a pipe. I don't bother with trying to waterproof 3d printed solar enclosures anymore after little success. Instead, I coat each electronic component in Conformal Coating, and drilled 2 side holes and 1 bottom hole which I cover with ePTFE ventilation stickers designed for growing mushrooms in Ball Jars. This allows air exchange without trapping condensed water vapor. Hot glue always fails eventually, so if you are brave and decide to try and waterproof this rather than ventilate, use something better like silicone or more B7000. After that, mask the panel surface and paint or coat with Flex Seal.
