Description
I keep buying woodworking projects and solving the problems by designing and printing things...
I picked up this leather strop kit from Taylor Toolworks to help sharpen knives and chisels.
Printed version shown is 50% fill 0.35-mm layer height. Material is Sunlu black ASA.
The image shown is one each of:
DoubleSidedStropTwoPieceBluntEnd1
DoubleSidedStropTwoPieceHandleEnd1
DoubleSidedStropTwoPieceBluntEnd2
DoubleSidedStropTwoPieceHandleEnd2
BluntEnd1 and HandleEnd1 go together and BluntEnd2 and HandleEnd2 go together. The dovetails are reversed on the two sets so that they will not have a common line of failure when glued together.
The dovetail versions are designed with zero clearance (intentionally). For assembly, I used a very sharp chisel to trim just a bit off of the perimeter of dovetails on the back of the BluntEnd, and off of the perimeter of the front of the dovetails on the HandleEnd, That allows them to start to fit together reasonably easily. I pressed them together in a 5-in vise with a piece of wood on each side. I first pressed them about halfway together, then I then applied acetone to the dovetails and pressed the parts the rest of the way together. They are not coming apart now.
The leather (suede shown) is glued on to the assembled parts with Barge contact cement.
The original intent was to glue the assembled halves together (the one with the suede strop and the one with the smooth strop), but I think that I am going to leave them separate for now.
The complete piece is too large for my Prusa i3 Mk2S, so I split it in half.
I have included a single piece to make a double sided strop (print 2), and I included a single piece one-sided strop holder as well for people that have larger print volumes.
