Description
Want a weekend project, to "supe" up a gift to someone with a VERY fancy gift box, and/or to cosplay Link?
This set of printable and assemble-able models create an open-able and use-able wood version of a shrine chest found in Zelda Breath of the Wild.
This assembly will snap and hold shut thanks to a clasp mechanism between the clasp and the bottom model.
-
To Close: simply press the top and bottom together until it snaps shut
-
To Open: Pull out and up on the base of the clasp circle
Successfully printed via a Bambu Carbon X1 in PLA
Assembly
-
Print out each file - the hinge file needs two copies (or use the pre-setup printable 3MF files)
-
Spray paint primer that's specially designed to stick to plastics
-
Paint (I used a wood grain technique by painting in a dark color on top of the wet base color and then smearing the two together) - be careful not paint the contact areas of the assembly (the tolerances are too tight to account for paint thickness)
-
Optional: Use glow-in-the-dark paint on the inlays of the decor pieces
-
Glue the components together
-
I used just Elmer's glue for everything but the places that will see the most stress where I used a superglue instead
-
Places that will see the most stress are the clasp to the top and the legs to the bottom
-
-
Pop the top assembly with the hinge onto the bottom assembly (requires pressure to get the hinges together)
-
Seal the paint job with several clear acrylic or urethane coats (make sure you don't accidentally seal your hinges shut)
Assembly interfaces have 0.1mm gaps. Note that this gap can easily be decreased by the printing process (warping, extrusion swell, etc), paint, or expanding glue.
Files
-
STLs: There are SEVEN separate STL files to download. Only the hinge model needs two copies.
-
I recommend a large layer height for the top and "bot" models, but know that the top/bottom modelled-in wood grain may disappear when sliced as they were only given a 0.1mm thickness
-
I recommend a small layer height for the "decor", clasp, and leg files. I also recommend angling the decor and claps files for a balance between detail and little support
-
All but the top and "bot" and top "decor" models REQUIRE SUPPORT
- See the 3MF files for suggested orientation/support locations
-
-
3MF: There are four 3MF builds needed to print out all required parts (instead of using the STLs). They are setup for BambuLabs using a Carbon X1 and PLA. Large layer height models are at 0.28mm and the small layer height parts are at 0.16 mm.
-
Weeks_Solidworks.zip contains all the Solidworks Part files AND the assembly file for those who want to make more controlled modifications. All files are required as the parts have relations to each other.
