This bust represents Charles-Marie-Étienne Champion Dubois de Nansouty, a 19th-century French officer and scientist best known for his decisive role in the foundation of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre Observatory in the Pyrenees. Born in 1815 and passing away in 1895, General de Nansouty was a pioneer of meteorological and scientific observation in high-mountain environments. A visionary and determined figure, he devoted much of his life to demonstrating the importance of studying the climate and atmosphere from high-altitude locations.
This 3D-printed bust is a reproduction inspired by the bust located at the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, paying tribute to one of the founders of the famous observatory. The sculpture captures the distinctive features of the historical figure: a face marked by experience, carefully sculpted moustache and beard, and a serious expression that reflects the scientific rigor and determination required to carry out such an ambitious project in extreme mountain conditions.
Nansouty’s story is closely linked to that of the Pic du Midi. Through perseverance, he organized the first scientific expeditions to the summit and actively contributed to the creation of the earliest facilities dedicated to high-altitude meteorological observation. His commitment and work helped transform this Pyrenean summit into a major scientific center, now internationally recognized for its research in astronomy and atmospheric sciences.
This bust therefore serves as a tribute to one of the key figures of scientific exploration in the mountains and to the man who helped establish the Pic du Midi as an iconic site of scientific research.
